Mary Davis Brown papers, 1854-1994; (bulk, 1867-1901).

Chiefly diaries, 1854-1859, and 1867-1901, re family activities and thoughts on religious subjects, including births, deaths, and marriages; services at Beersheba Presbyterian Church; out-migration of neighbors to Mississippi and Arkansas; the Female College at Yorkville, S.C.; and the purchase and deaths of slaves. Later materials discuss the arrest of members of the Ku Klux Klan, and the ensuing trial by judges from New York; temperance meetings and Grange meetings; the earthquake and aftershocks of Sept. 1886; and political speeches, including those of 3 July 1890, given by gubernatorial candidates Benjamin Tillman, William E. Earle, & John Bratton. Diary, 1860-1869 [not included on the published microfilm set], re news of family, church, and the Civil War and the early years of Reconstruction in York County, S.C. (photocopy of original diary and transcription; 54 sheets). Genealogical information, ca. 1846-1883, re the Castles family of S.C. and elsewhere, recorded in a Bible, published 1868; photocopy of family history information available in folder. Bible includes inscription by Mary Davis Brown, dated 2 Nov. 1869, who presented this volume to her daughter, Emily J. Brown Castles and son-in-law, Ebenezer Pressley Castles, the day they left to cross the Arkansas River. Collection also includes 15 undated items, chiefly Brown family genealogical charts, pages from the family Bible, list of birth dates of the children of Joab and Mary Parker Price; and notes re the microfilmed edition of the diaries, including corrections to the pagination and arrangement of the microfilmed version.
